-
Resilience
The quality of being flexible in our thoughts feelings and behaviours during the setbacks and challenges in life. Coaching conversations help us to find and cultivate these inner qualities that exist within us all.
-
Fulfilment
A sense of discovering the direction we wish to travel in, and then deciding to savour every moment of the journey. Coaching allows us to reconnect to what is important to us and why. It helps restore our map and our compass to our own life journey.
-
Wellbeing
The state of balance in life, that means we are comfortable and healthy. Wellbeing spreads across all areas of our life and isn’t just limited to family life or career. Coaching lets us examine the direction that we currently have in life, and the steps we can take to restore our balance.
About Our Coaching
-
At the heart of our coaching is a key belief, and it is this “We are all perfect, just the way we are….. and there is room for improvement.”
This means that there is no room in a coaching conversation for diagnosing or fixing. As Jon Kabatt Zin, one of the major founders of Mindfulness puts it “As long as you are breathing, there is more that is right with you than wrong with you….”
This doesn’t mean that there isn’t difficulty or suffering. In fact, coaching will often gently encourage people to really pay attention and acknowledge their present moment experience, and commonly there will be difficult emotions or sensations ready to be noticed. But rather than trying to cure, fix, remove or hide difficulties, coaching recognises that we are all capable of healing over time, once we have had the opportunity to come to terms with things, just the way they are, in full awareness.
We believe one of the most important foundations in coaching is ‘space’. By this we mean the environment in which the coaching takes place. The essential role of the coach is to build and maintain an environment that is safe, honest and compassionate. Within this environment the coachee is free to explore how they can heal and grow, knowing that they are free from harm and supported every step of the way.

Because our work focuses on the natural ups and downs that come from being human, we work with all humans.
However coaching like anything, has its limits, and needs to come at the right time, right place, and from the right person. This is why a 30 minute chemistry session and also our initial self explorations questions are important.
Rather than exclude anybody out of hand, we would encourage that if you think our coaching might be useful, that you contact us and we will take it from their.
Please be aware that for insurance purposes we only work with people under 18 years of age providing a parent/guardian or support worker is with them at all times. Please also see our mentoring page for further information for how we can support young people.

Our sessions start with a 30 minute free chemistry session. This typically takes place via zoom, and is an opportunity for both parties to find out a little more about each other and to discover if the coaching relationship is the best way forwards at the present time.
We offer a package of 5 sessions.
Prior to the sessions taking place we provide some self exploration paperwork, which helps the coach and coachee to get a deeper sense of the areas of focus during the coaching.
At the end of each session the coach and coachee will agree on skills that can be practiced in between sessions. As an example this might include a breathing or meditation practice or keeping a journal.
The first few sessions are about discovery and typically focus on getting to the heart of what is most important to be explored.
The next session or two are about awareness and they tend to have a focus on how healing or growth can take place more often.
The final session(s) are about choice and tend to have an emphasis on who we would now like to be, and the direction that can be taken.

Wellbeing Coaching is a broad subject. It focuses on how we can reduce our levels of suffering, and increase our ability to live a fulfilling and meaningful life. To that end we put a lot of study and research into the coaching that we deliver. Some of this can be explored more specifically through our articles, workshops and retreats. But we have outlined here some of the subjects, that influence our work.
Mindfulness - Mindfulness is sometimes described as “paying attention in a particular way on purpose” it has overwhelming numbers of studies demonstrating how practicing mindfulness changes the brain, and strengthens our ability to regulate our emotions. As coaches we know first hand that understanding and practising mindfulness can be a powerful way to reduce stress and increase a sense of wellbeing. Mindfulness is a key component in our coaching. Contained within Mindfulness are some of the teachings from Buddhism and Zen, and these are also areas that we find have useful implications for understanding wellbeing.
Values - Each human is motivated by fundamental needs that are important to them. We all have basic needs for Love and safety, beyond that we tend as individuals to value some needs more than others, for instance a need for harmony.
Compassionate Communication (also known as non violent communication) - Compassionate Communication is both a method of deep listening and also offers some helpful ways to communicate in a way that promotes a meaningful connection. It also includes values (or needs) at the core of its message.
Trauma Aware - Trauma is a response to a terrible event that we may have experienced or witnessed. Many of us carry trauma. The effects of trauma can be complex and are often hidden from the conscious memory to protect ourselves from experiencing more pain. Being trauma aware means that we recognise the impact and complexities that trauma creates within the mind and the body and that we create an environment through our communication, tone, body language and the design of our courses, activities and sessions that is safe and judgement free.

An adventure takes us into the unknown. In this unknown we get to open up our minds and fill up our bucket with new experiences. An adventure asks us to see and do things differently. A good adventure will often leave us feeling inspired.
It isn’t necessary to encounter huge challenges or undertake big risks in order to experience an adventure. In fact we think the best adventures come from when we remain present and not be overwhelmed by difficulty.
We don’t have to go far for an adventure. It’s possible even to have an adventure by stepping out of our front door.
Adventures tend to include nature, and there is a lot of evidence to show how being in natural environments promotes wellbeing.
Adventures also tend to include movement, which has a huge impact on wellbeing.

A good Coach listens deeply and pays attention to human language and behaviour. They use questions, observations and insights to help you to explore what is most important for you. A coach is not a specialist in your life. They will not educate you or tell you what they think you should do. They work in partnership with you, as you move towards building your own inner strength and power.

Outdoor Coaching
“The evidence of positive effects from nature includes studies on specific psychological conditions such as depression, anxiety and mood disorder. Access to nature has also been found to improve sleep and reduce stress, increase happiness and reduce negative emotions, promote positive social interactions and even help generate a sense of meaning to life. Being in green environments boosts various aspects of thinking, including attention, memory and creativity, in people both with and without depression. “The evidence is very solid,” says psychologist Marc Berman at the University of Chicago.”
Extract from New Scientist: Green Spaces aren’t just for nature - they boost our mental health too
We deliver coaching sessions in beautiful locations around the Peak District. Alongside all the positive effects that nature has on mental health, our outdoor coaching creates a safe place to share what is on your heart and mind.
Typically a session will involve a stroll through woodland or parkland and finding a comfortable place such as a bench or log to sit for and talk for a while. It will often involve engaging in nature in different ways, perhaps stopping by a stream or a lake, perhaps making a fire and a cup of tea, or even a simple rock climb, all of these activities help us to feel more grounded and connected to the world, they can bring with them a sense of gratitude, peace or playfulness
